Non-Tagalog Indie Films increasing in number

Indie films are becoming a vehicle for the intellectualization of non-Tagalog languages. Consider the following non-Tagalog entries in this year's Cinemalaya film festival:

Angan-Angan (Dreams) by Sheron Dayoc
Basilan

Namets! (Delicious!) by Jay Abello
Iloilo

then we also have this Dabawenyo gay lingo film by a contemporary at the UP College of Mass Communication:

The Thank You Girls by Charliebebs Gohetia
Davao

Indie filmmaking... when will it penetrate the Kapampangan community? Hopefully by the end of the year! Abangan! ;)

Thank You girls is perhaps one of the most beautiful Indie films ngayon, naalala ko tuloy ang isang film na The Paper Dolls, considered as one of the best!

Mabuhay!

hi laxie. i remember you were one of the many people concerned last year about cinemalaya not following their own rules. so this year, they made their rules even stricter by saying that even the shorts should not be in production before january 2008.

most of the mindanao films in this year's cinemalaya had their manila premiere at our festival - the Kontra-Agos, resistance film festival last december 2007. yes, this was a non-competition festival and more low-profile (i'd like to say more honest - hehe), but it was a successful one still - kahet na wala kaming budget because kiri and i were practically running the festival by ourselves. dito ko unang napanood yung angan-angan ni sheron and the other 2 films in the children's section.

what's my point? i'm happy that the mindanao filmmakers are finally getting attention. i first noticed their shorts when i went to davao as a panel and a member of the jury of the mindanao film festival. but cinemalaya should stop creating rules that would restrict some great short films from entering their pretentious festival. and the way to do that is not to create rules and later on break them - but do away with the pa-self-important rules. yun lang.
